Before Antietam

He enlisted as Private, Company M, First Virginia Volunteer Infantry for Mexican War service on 17 November 1847, and was discharged 3 August 1848. He then served as Private, Company I, 4th US Infantry from 23 October 1848 to 23 October 1853. He re-enlisted, in Company K of the 4th Infantry on 5 January 1854, and rose through the ranks to First Sergeant by 24 October 1862. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 4th US Infantry to date from 18 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

He was at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He was acting Assistant QM at Fort Wood, New York Harbor (1863-64) and Disbursing Officer in Pittsburgh, PA (1864-65). Brevet First Lieutenant for Chancellorsville and Captain for Gettysburg. Promoted First Lieutenant on 19 October 1863.

After the War

He continued in Regular Army service, and was promoted to Captain in July 1866. He retired on 20 March 1879.
