Before Antietam

He enlisted at age 20 in Company D, First Delaware Infantry on 7 August 1861 at Wilmington. Appointed Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 1 October 1861. Promoted from Sergeant Major to 2nd Lieutenant, Company D on 20 December 1861. Promoted to First Lieutenant, Company C, on 17 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was acting Adjutant in Maryland and was wounded by artillery fire on 16 September 1862 at Antietam. He was the first combat casualty in the First Delaware.

The rest of the War

Transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps 10 September 1864.
