Before the Antietam Campaign: He graduated from the USMA in 1841 (at 20 years old), served on garrison and frontier duty, and in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. In September 1861 he was appointed BGen. of Volunteers, commanded the 2nd Brigade/2nd Division/IV Corps in the Peninsula campaign, and the 2nd Brigade/2nd Division/VI Corps at the Seven Days (wounded). In the Antietam Campaign: He was in command of the 2nd Brigade of the Second Division/Sixth (VI) Corps... [actions during the battle to be added later]. The remainder of the War: He led the 1st Division/VI Corps at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In June 1863 he was promoted to MGen. of Volunteers, but this was later revoked. He commanded the Department of the Monongahela, and the 1st Division/XVIII Corps at Cold Harbor and Petersburg. He resigned his commission because of poor health in July 1864.
