Before the Antietam Campaign:
Pre-War Profession: Importer, expert in porcelain. In June 1861 he was commissioned Major in the 28th Pennsylvania Regiment, then promoted to LCol.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He commanded the First Brigade of the Second Division of the Twelfth (XII) Army Corps but was wounded and replaced in Brigade command by Maj. Orrin J. Crane of the 7th OH.

The remainder of the War:
In November 1862 he was appointed BGen. of Volunteers and commanded the 1st Brigade/3rd Division/XI Corps at Wauhatchie. He resigned his commission in August 1864 due to ill health.

After the War:
He resumed his Import business and was a politician.
