From Pawtucket, he enlisted on 9 September 1861 in Company G, 4th Rhode Island Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was admitted to the US Army General Hospital at Frederick, MD on 13 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was sent to Stanton General Hospital in Washington, DC on 5 December. He left hospital and transferred to the 37th Company, 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps on 7 October 1863. He reenlisted on 26 April 1864. He was discharged as Corporal in 36th Company, 2nd Battalion, VRC on 10 April 1866.
