Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted in Company A, 9th New York Infantry at age 20 on 4 May 1861. He was wounded in the side at River Bridge (South Mills/Camden), NC on 19 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He mustered out with his Company on 20 May 1863.
