George E. Williams

(1845 - 1885)

Before Antietam

Giving his age as 18 (he was 16), he enlisted on 30 December 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company F, 7th Maine Infantry on 23 January 1862.

On the Campaign

Major Hyde had ordered him to the rear with the other "guidon boy" Johnny Begg, but they both snuck back to join the Regiment before its charge that afternoon.

He was discharged by civil authority, probably for being underage, on 5 February 1863. He enlisted again, on 20 November 1863 in Company C, 2nd Maine Cavalry and mustered out with them on 6 December 1865.

After the War

By 1870 he was a laborer/lumberman at Rockton in Clearfield County, PA. In 1880 he was a farmer and lumberman in Huston Township, Clearfield County.
