Before Antietam

A farmer in Pepperell, he enlisted in Company D, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 18 on 12 May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the side with 3 ribs broken in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Returned to duty on 5 April 1863. Reenlisted. Captured in action at Waynesboro, VA on 2 February 1865. At parole camp on 28 March, and mustered out of service on 12 June 1865.
