Before Antietam

A weaver in South Hadley Falls, he enlisted as Corporal in Company G, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 20 in May 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the thigh in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

Discharged for wounds on 21 May 1863. Enlisted in Company L, 3rd New Jersey Cavalry in December 1863 and mustered on 24 March 1864. Promoted to Corporal on 1 October 1864, and to Sergeant 1 June 1865. He mustered out on 1 August 1865.
