A laborer in Wareham, he enlisted as Corporal in Company I, 2nd Massachusetts Infantry at age 23 on 20 May 1861.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Promoted Sergeant on 1 June 1863. Captured in action 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. In parole camp at muster-out on 28 May 1864.
