Before the Antietam Campaign:
Sailed to California and East Indies 1855-56; Europe in 1857. Enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company K on 25 May 1861, age 26. Commissioned Captain, Company D on 13 June 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He resigned due to continuing illness and was discharged on 29 March 1863.

After the War:
He was a wholesale coal merchant in Boston, partner in Bangs & Horton (with former 2nd Massachusetts brother officer Charles P. Horton), at 18 Kilby Street.
