Before the Antietam Campaign:
Appointed 2nd Lieutenant, Company D on 8 July 1861 and First Lieutenant on 13 June 1862.

The remainder of the War:
He was on the staff of Brigadier General William Dwight in New Orleans in 1863. Resigned for illness on 23 December 1863.

After the War:
He graduated with an MD from Harvard in 1875.

His brother Henry Livermore Abbott (KIA Wilderness, VA, 1864) was also at Antietam, with the 20th Massachusetts Infantry, His brother Edward Gardner Abbott (KIA Cedar Mountain, VA, 1862) had raised and Captained Company A of the 2nd, of which Fletcher had briefly been a member.
