Before Sharpsburg

A farmer from Stony Hill, Richmond County, he enlisted 23 September 1861 in Company D, 41st Virginia Militia, which transferred to the Richmond County Cavalry, 1st Battalion Virginia Cavalry on 24 October 1861, and became Company K, 9th Virginia Cavalry in January or February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action on 15 September 1862 at Boonsboro, MD.

The rest of the War

He was held at Ft. McHenry, MD until exchanged on 20 (October?) November 1862. He was reported absent without leave in July and August 1862, but otherwise present with his Company through the final roll of 1 September 1864. He was paroled at Westmoreland (VA) Court House on 6 May 1865.

After the War

He returned to Richmond County, and was a farmer there the rest of his life.
