Before Sharpsburg

A farmer, he enlisted in Company B, 3rd Virginia Artillery (Militia) on 5 February 1862 and was a Lieutenant. When that unit was mustered as an infantry unit for Confederate service, he enlisted instead on 20 July 1862 in Company G, 9th Virginia Cavalry.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action on 14 September 1862 at Boonsboro, MD.

The rest of the War

He was exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was promoted to Lieutenant in March 1863.mHe was captured at Namozine Church on 5 April 1865 and was released at Johnson's Island, OH on 19 June 1865.
