Before Antietam
From Leroy or Keekoskee, he enlisted as Sergeant, Company E, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 11 November 1861. Promoted First Lieutenant, Company B on 13 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.
The rest of the War
He was discharged for wounds on 3 April 1863.
