Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company B, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 19 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded again, in action at Chancellorsville, VA (1863). Transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 1 September 1863.
