Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company B, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for disability, date not given. He enlisted in Company A, 2nd Wisconsin Cavalry on 22 September 1863 and mustered out with that Company on 15 November 1865.
