Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company B, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 21 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
Discharged 25 October 1862 to enlist in the Regular US Army. He served in Company F, 6th US Cavalry.
