Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Oshkosh, he enlisted in Company B, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861 as Musician. He was appointed Drum Major 14 July 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He returned to his Company (as Private?) on 31 January 1863. He mustered out with his Company on 18 July 1865.
