Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Jefferson, he enlisted in Company C, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 22 April 1861. He was appointed Corporal, then Sergeant (dates not given).

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was again wounded, in action at Chancellorsville, VA in May 1863. He mustered out with his Company on 18 July 1865.
