Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Decatur, he enlisted in Company C, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 29 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps on 1 November 1863.

After the War:
He married Perloina Susan Spainhower (born 1849) in June 1866.
