Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Monroe, he enlisted in Company C, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 19 April 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was wounded at Beverly Ford (date not given, 1863) and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps 31 March 1864. He reenlisted on 4 May 1864 and was discharged 19 December 1865.
