From Leroy, he enlisted in Company E, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 1 May 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps on 16 December 1863.
