Age 19, he enlisted in Company D (the Joe Matthews Rifles), 2nd Mississippi Infantry in 1 May 1861 in Tippah County.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in the leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at a hospital in Charlottesville, VA and then furloughed. He did not return to his Company and was listed as a deserter and dropped from the rolls on 31 December 1864.
