Before Antietam

From Herman, he enlisted in Company E, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry on 27 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The rest of the War

By then a Corporal, he was discharged to enlist in the Regular Army on 28 January 1863. He enlisted at Ft. Schuyler, NY on that date. He was listed as Frank Kruger, age 23 (actually 28), and was described as having gray eyes, dark hair and complexion, and being 5 feet, 7 inches tall. He was assigned to Battery B, 5th US Artillery. He reenlisted in January 1864.
