Before the Antietam Campaign:
Pre-War Profession: Lawyer. In May 1861 he was appointed Colonel of the 3rd Georgia regiment, and served in North Carolina and Georgia. In June 1862 he was appointed BGen and commanded Wright's Brigade/Huger's Division at the Seven Days. He commanded Wright's Brigade/R. H. Anderson's Division at Second Manassas.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Commanded Wright' Brigade in R. H. Anderson's Division of Longstreet's Command. He was wounded in the combat in the Sunken Road, and relieved in command of the Brigade by Col. Robert Jones of the 22nd Georgia.

The remainder of the War:
He continued in command of his Brigade at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor. He led the Brigade in Mahone's Division at Petersburg, and in November 1864 was promoted to MGen. and ordered to Georgia.

After the War:
He was a lawyer newspaper publisher and was elected to the US Congress in 1872, but died before he could take his seat.
