Before the Antietam Campaign:
Age , 25 years. He enlisted at age 25 in Rochester, NY, to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company H, 78th New York Infantry on 14 December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 29 September 1863.
