Before the Antietam Campaign:
From Richfield Springs, he enlisted at age 30 in New York City to serve three years, and mustered in as First Sergeant, Company C, 78th New York Infantry on 15 November 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.
