Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 29 in Utica, NY, to serve three years, and mustered in as Private, Company D, 78th New York Infantry on 15 January 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was again wounded in action, on 3 July 1863 at Gettysburg, PA. He was discharged for disability on 21 November 1863 at Philadelphia, PA.
