Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted at age 21 on 27 December 1861 at New York City to serve three years; mustered in as Private, Company A, 78th New York Infantry on 28 December 1861.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Antietam.

The remainder of the War:
He was discharged for disability on 31 March 1863, at the US General Hospital, Fort Schuyler, NY.
