Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a grocer from Larkinsville when he enlisted on 27 April 1861 as a First Sergeant in Company F, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was promoted to Junior 2nd Lieutenant on 30 July 1861, First Lieutenant on 20 April 1862, and Captain on 28 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
