He was an unmarried 21 year old farmer from Newton Academy, AL when he enlisted as 4th Sergeant on 25 April 1861 in Company E, 4th Alabama Infantry. He resigned and returned to ranks as Private in August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was captured in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863, and remained a prisoner to the end of the War.
