Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was a married attorney from Sparta, AL when he enrolled as First Lieutenant on 25 April 1861 in Company E, 4th Alabama Infantry. Promoted to Captain 22 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was mortally wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and died the next day.
