He was an unmarried 17 year old student from Burnsville, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 September 1861 in Company A, 4th Alabama Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was in action at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862, but discharged 26 January 1863.
