Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an unmarried 28 year old merchant from Selma, AL when he enrolled as 2nd Lieutenant on 26 April 1861 in Company A, 4th Alabama Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was wounded in action on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Promoted to Captain after Captain Reuben Kidd's death at Chickamauga, GA in September 1863. He was wounded in action at Hanover Junction, VA on 23 May 1864.
