Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an unmarried 20 year old farmer from Tuskegee, AL when he enlisted as Private on 28 April 1861 in Company B, 4th Alabama Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Present with his Company in action in most engagements at least through the siege of Petersburg in 1864. He is on the list of those paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, VA on 9 April 1865.
