Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an unmarried 18 year old farmer from Warrior Stand, AL when he enlisted as Private on 28 April 1861 in Company B, 4th Alabama Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He transferred at age 19 to Company C, 15th Alabama Infantry on 3 February 1863. Promoted to 5th Sergeant on 1 June 1863, 4th Sergeant 1 September, and 3rd Sergeant 1 September 1864.
