He was an unmarried 19 year old farmer from Tuskegee, AL when he enlisted as Private on 28 April 1861 in Company B, 4th Alabama Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
He was Promoted to 1st Lieutenant in "General Moody's Cavalry" - 53rd Regiment Alabama Cavalry (Partisan Rangers), Company A, in to date from August 1862.
