Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an unmarried 22 year old farmer from Selma, AL when he enlisted as Private on 26 April 1861 in Company C, 4th Alabama Infantry.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
In action at Fredericksburg and Suffolk, VA. Promoted and transferred as 2nd Lieutenant to the 25th Alabama Infantry on 22 June 1863.
