He was an unmarried 19 year old printer from Huntsville, AL when he enlisted as Private on 1 September 1861 in Company F, 4th Alabama Infantry at Bristoe Station, VA.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain and at Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
Present with his Company in action in most engagements to the siege of Petersburg, VA in 1864.
