He was an unmarried 22 year old printer from Huntsville, AL when he enlisted as Private on 21 May 1861 in Company F, 4th Alabama Infantry at Harpers Ferry, VA. Present with his Company in engagements from First to Second Manassas.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action on South Mountain.

The remainder of the War:
Present in action in most engagements until he was killed in action in the Wilderness, VA on 7 May 1864.
