Before the Antietam Campaign:
He was an unmarried 21 year old farmer from Vaiden, MS when he enlisted as First Sergeant on 7 August 1861 in Company G, 4th Alabama Infantry then at Manassas, VA. Present at engagements from Seven Pines to Second Manassas, VA.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
In action with his Company from Fredericksburg, VA, in December 1862 to Chickamauga, GA, where he was killed in action on 20 September 1863, by then listed as Captain (date of rank not given).
