He was an unmarried 18 year old farmer from Florence, AL when he enlisted as Private on 28 April 1861 in Company H, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First Manassas to Malvern Hill, VA. He was promoted to 5th Sergeant on 21 April 1862, and to 4th Sergeant on June 24.

On the Campaign

Present in action at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

In action from Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862 (where he was appointed 3rd Sergeant) through to the siege of Petersburg, VA to the end of 1864.
