He was an unmarried 28 year old boatman from Dalton, GA when he enlisted as Private on 28 April 1861 in Company H, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action at Boonsboro and Sharpsburg.

The remainder of the War:
In action from Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862 through the Gettysburg Campaign in mid-1863. Noted (date not given): Received one days leave of absence at Dalton, Ga., and has not reported since.
