He was an unmarried 23 year old grocer from Waterloo, AL when he enlisted as Private on 28 April 1861 in Company H, 4th Alabama Infantry. He was present at most engagements from First to Second Manassas, VA.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Present in action at Boonsboro.

The remainder of the War:
In action from Chickamauga, GA in September 1863 to Cold Harbor and Deep Bottom, VA in 1864.
