Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enlisted as Private in the Danville Artillery, and was appointed Sergeant before Sharpsburg.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action in Nicodemus Heights at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The remainder of the War:
Tended by his brother Peyton, he died of wounds overnight on the field.
