A married 30 year old farmer with three children, he enlisted in Company D, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion as 3rd Sergeant on 1 December 1861 in Columbia, SC. Reduced to Private on 1 June 1862. Transferred 1 July to Company E, and promoted Corporal in August.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap.
