Before the Antietam Campaign:
A married 39 year old, he enlisted in Company C, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion as Corporal on 2 December 1861 in Columbia, SC. Promoted Sergeant 3 August 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
Elected 3rd Lieutenant on 15 September 1862.

The remainder of the War:
Ill in General Hospital #4, Richmond, VA in September 1863 and back to duty in February 1864. Ill again in the same hospital in August 1864.
