Before the Antietam Campaign:
He enrolled in Company F, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Regiment as 3rd Lieutenant on 30 January 1862 at Columbia, SC at about age 38. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant 30 April 1862.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was mortally wounded in action on 14 September 1862 at Fox's Gap.

The remainder of the War:
He died on 18 September 1862.
