Before the Antietam Campaign:
A married 28 year old from the Laurens District, he enlisted as Sergeant in Company C, 3rd South Carolina Infantry Battalion on 2 December 1861 in Columbia, SC.

In the Antietam Campaign:
He was killed in action at Fox's Gap on 14 September 1862.
